On Saturday, July 1, the solemnity of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus was celebrated in the Basilica of Gethsemane, in Jerusalem.

On the venerated rock, where, according to tradition, Jesus experienced His agony, rose petals symbolized his blood, remembering the words of the evangelist Saint Luke:

The celebration was presided by Fr. Francesco Patton, Custos of the Holy Land, with the participation of Fr. Dobromir Jasztal, Vicar of the Custody and Br. Benito Jose Choque, guardian of the Gethsemane Basilica, together with Fr. Diego dalla Gassa, guardian of the Gethsemane Hermitage, as well as many other priests.

During the liturgy, the reading of the passage of the sacrifice of the Passover took place, as well as the passage from the Book of Apocalypse: and finally Luke's Gospel to retrace the suffering of Jesus in the night of his agony at Gethsemane.

In the homily, Fr. Patton stressed: "We are not even able to imagine what Jesus felt, Jesus' suffering. He prayed to be in sync with the will of the Father. Jesus opened a gateway from Adam to us, passing on the story of salvation. The Most Precious Blood of the Lord purifies all our lives and is poured out by virtue of his love for us, because love is stronger than death.”

Guardian of Gethsemane Basilica
"In this unique solemnity, which centers on this sacred rock that received the precious blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we, the children of St. Francis, want to thank God for this privilege and we ask once again to be able to duly guard this place through the welcoming of pilgrims from around the world who want to touch this rock on which the Lord sweated his most holy blood.”

Gethsemane Hermitage
"The solemn celebration, even through the liturgy, of this feast of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, is important to us. That rock is the witness, a living memory of Jesus, of his blood. The son of God redeems humanity by shedding his blood on this rock. It is a great gift. We can see the mystery of redemption in every drop of blood that falls on the ground.”

During the celebration, hundreds of pilgrims from around the world came to visit the Gethsemane Basilica.

"It was a profoundly moving experience. I was able to re-experience the entire story of salvation. It was a blessing that I received, not because of my own merits, but by virtue of the goodness of God. I was able to live here and study theology in the holy places for 4 years and I thank God for the opportunity I had to be involved in the spirituality of these places. And as the Guardian of the Shrine emphasized, let us thank God for the friars, for their custody of the holy places. Once again today, I had the opportunity to attend the celebration of Jesus' Most Precious Blood. A great blessing for me, before returning to Brazil.”

"In addition, the blood of Jesus brings peace to the whole world, and especially to this land, to his holy land, to our holy land."
