A scared flock

It is as if time has stopped at that night between 6 and 7 August 2014 when more than 120,000 Christians in the Nineveh Plain, in Iraq, were forced to abandon their homes. The devastating fury of ISIS...running away is the only solution. Five years later, Abu Mariam, originally from the Mosul area, welcomes us into the walls of what only on the outside looks like a house in Amman, Jordan. Between his hands, a mobile phone... It's all that remains of a lifetime. RAKAN BOULOS NEJMAN “ABU MARIAM” Iraqi refugee in Jordan "I lost my home in Iraq. The home where I have lived since I was a child. I left it one night...I wasn’t expecting what happened to us." A glint in the eyes when talking about a pain that doesn't seem to fade: RAKAN BOULOS NEJMAN “ABU MARIAM” Iraqi refugee in Jordan "They liberated the area where I come from, my heart leapt for my country. I told my wife that I wanted to see our house and if things were okay, we would gather there. I came back after three days of waiting. When I arrived, I found my house... burned down. The work of a lifetime disappeared in 5 minutes. I didn't have a place anymore...I had to look for a new one, for a safe one, for my family." Indelible memories and the expectation of a future still to be built! This is the double face of refugees: hope and despair, happiness mixed with anger at the wounds caused by years of war. NADA NEJMAN Iraqi refugee in Jordan "Since we got here, I'm not happy. I have always wanted to go back to Iraq, to my home, to my family, but the future of my girls is more important. I know that the conditions in the country are not positive: there is no water, no electricity and there are still militia men here and there. I don't want my daughters to experience what I have experienced: 8 years of war with Iran, the war with Kuwait, the embargo and the fall." According to data from the UN human rights agency, there are about 70,000 Iraqi refugees registered in Jordan. Without work permits, education for children; the only support for Christian families comes from the church... years waiting for that little miracle: a visa for a new life. NADA NEJMAN Iraqi refugee in Jordan "Let us hope for a better fate. The most important thing is the future and security for my daughters. The pain of the young Yazidi...is difficult when I think about it. That's why I want to go somewhere safe." We ran away with nothing, just the documents - the couple tell us. We will give the little we have to those in need when we leave Jordan. You can see that they don't have much, but they do have in their hearts lots of strength, love and faith. RAKAN BOULOS NEJMAN “ABU MARIAM” Iraqi refugee in Jordan "I have not lost faith in God, God is always with us. I have a strong faith and I am not afraid...life goes on."
